Emma Haugh - Photography

Emma worked with the children to investigate aspects of representation through photographic portraiture, paying particular attention to how light can be used to create certain atmospheres and considering constructed and documentary photographic approaches.

Vera Klute - Painting

The children had previously seen a set of painted portraits by Klute in which the eyes moved in the otherwise still image of a face. In this workshop they created self-portraits using a photographic image and paint. To these portraits they also added a kinetic element such as eyes looking from side to side, a tongue sticking in and out or whatever other element they imagined would work.

Mark Garry - Found Object

The children made individual and collaborative hyperbolic paraboloid and other geometrically shaped sculptural works using paper, wool and straws exploring geometry and form.

Michelle Browne - Participatory

Drawing directly from Tino Sehgal’s This Progress the children were invited to think about how an interaction might be choreographed for a viewer. They were asked to consider the role of the audience or viewer of an artwork. How can an artwork be created by the viewer? They went through a series of exercises that led on from the performance workshop – working with action, storytelling and language to develop participative ideas. In this work, 'Falling', the children collaboratively constructed a scenario for the rest of their classmates that allowed the participant to ‘fall’ in whatever way they chose.

Michelle Browne - Performance

The children explored meaning in actions and action as language through a number of exercises including the creation of a moving sculpture and a group performance.

Ruth Lyons - Moving Image

In these workshops the children developed, storyboarded and shot a short video exploring an alternative use for a familiar object, in this case it was a large object seen daily outside their school - ‘the portico’ is a structural ruin from an old manor which was suggested in the video piece as the ark from the Noah’s Ark story. The intention of the alternative use of a commonly seen object or objects was to generate a humorous and distorted perspective on the world we live in, as in Ever is All Over (Pipilotti Rist), Fly Fishing (Ruth Lyons) or Moby Dick (Guy Ben-Ner).

Sven Anderson - Sound

Sven worked with the children on combining field recordings originating from different natural and urban environments into Impossible Ecologies, acoustical assemblages in which the sounds of animals and locations which could not exist together in reality are allowed to converge in the form of temporary multi-channel sound installations.

Isabel Nolan - Sculpture

Using everyday materials and found objects the children created sculptural elements that they imagined might exist in a parallel world with differing conditions (such as human beings not wearing shoes or there being continual daylight). In doing so the intention was to develop their understanding of cause and effect by discussing how small changes can have big consequences as well as to instigate a discussion about what it means to represent familiar things in a strange way.

Felicity Clear - Drawing

Using images from the built environment (electricity pylons, scaffolding and overhead wires…) as reference points the children created simple 3d structures from which they created shadows using projected light. From these shadows they traced onto paper building up abstracted 2d drawings

Tamarin Norwood - Art-writing

This workshop introduced children to the idea that writing can happen without language, and the possibility that anything can work as ‘art’ if you look at it askance. The workshop integrated practical exercises that pull writing towards scribbling, drawing, graphical musical notation, dance steps and storytelling.
